Day 4 Norseman to Eucla

We headed off for the day. Again a rainy start and it has continued to rain on and off most of the day. The first part of the day was traveling through Mulga type scrub which the rain made the trunks of the trees shiny.

As we travel sand flat lakes with the reds and yellows appeared along the edge of the road. We stopped for morning tea, a top up of fuel and of course oil at Balladonia Roadhouse. While we were there a few old Buicks rolled in. I figured if a 1936 Buick could do the trip then the 1985 Landy should be able to. One was from Toowoomba and his mate from Brisbane.

The roadhouse at Balladonia is also where there are pieces of Skylab from when it came down across the desert.

After the fill up we headed across the 90 mile straight. 146 km of straight road, the longest stretch in Australia.

In the afternoon we came towards a lookout and both wondered what there was to look out at. We’re we surprised. The Bunda Cliffs over look the Roe Plain that runs along the coast. The cliffs become the cliffs of the Great Australian Bight. We assume they used to be the original coast line at some stage. Amazing view.

We finally got to Eucla on dark. It sits on top of the cliffs right at the start of the Bight. The only room they had was a “budget room”. $85 for a box, Lino floor and a … Bed (??). Mmmm. Well we hadn’t booked ahead.
