Pickup

Well we headed to Cowaramup to finally pickup the landy. After the past few weeks of working with the owner and a local mechanic at 3000km we could now set eyes on the old girl. After a catchup with Jeff the owner we handed over the cash. Everything looked good and we talked through the history and did a final check.

So we could check out a few wineries in the Margaret River area, we decided to leave the landy where she was and keep using the hire car we had to drive for the day. After spending more then we should on several cases of wine, we headed back and transferred all our gear over, set off back up to Busselton to drop of the hire car and say hi to the mechanics who had been doing some great work for us (oh and pay their bill).

But everything was not quite right. In the pre-purchase inspection the oil light had been highlighted and then after the service with a complete oil change it was supposed to be better, but appeared to be a little worse. On the drive up to Bussellton the oil light slowly came on and would not completely go off with a few extra revs. It wasn’t permanent and there was no other symptoms, so just took it steady. We went straight to the mechanic and got them to have a look. We decided to remove the sender and replace with a gauge on the suggestion of my Dad, a long time landy owner.

Problems was the only gauge available would not fit. The thread was not matching. The other issue was there were three sensors around the oil filter and we were not sure what was what. Quick internet search gave some info but that didn’t help to solve the problem. We put the cable back on and the mechanic took her form a drive to see if he could either get a gauge or have the sender checked by an Auto-elec. 15 min later he was back and good news.

It turned out the senders had been swapped so did not match the info we had from the web search. The sender the cable had been on was the oil temp and not the oil pressure. A test of the sender and a swap confirm everything was working well when hooked up correctly. It all made sense, when I as driving up to Busselton the engine heated up and the light started coming on.

So with the panic over we finally returned the hire car and found accommodation still in Busselton.
